EINBLICKE IN DIE PRAXIS von Lisa Siomicheva

Common Water Creative Laboratory“

// HAMBURG 7-15 October 2022

My project was realised in the frames of the international project “Common Water”. “Common Water” is an interdisciplinary art project connecting cultural actors and local communities of waterfront towns Hamburg (Germany), Gdansk and Sopot (Poland) and St. Petersburg (Russia). By means of art we research the common cultural identity of people around the Baltic Sea and discuss how we can address social, cultural and environmental challenges together. 3 art teams were working in collaboration on the same concept, developing the idea, structure and the methods of each creative lab for every local community.

From June to October 2022 I’ve been developing the concept of the creative lab that took place in Hamburg. Together with 2 artists from Zertifikatkurs – Ole Meergans and Alexandar Hadjiev – we have been working with the locals through the series of workshops.

The structure of the creative lab itself included artist-led workshops for the local community,  individual artistic work, open presentation and online-talk on the insights and results for other project members.

During the first 2 days in Hamburg, the artistic team worked with the community, using connecting and storytelling practices focusing on our common memories and stories. We discussed our experiences of the sea, similarities or differences we can find in our perception of it: what sounds, colours and textures we imagine when we think about it.

In the second phase, resulting from the workshops, the artistic team has been working on a production of the final installation in the Zinnschmelze cultural centre. Artists worked with their main mediums: Lisa worked with storytelling techniques and personal stories, Ole explored shapes, creating new forms and sculptures, while Alex worked with sound landscapes and explored the musical pieces created by women-composers living and working in Baltic states.

The final exhibition included sketches of the workshop participants, QR-Codes with sound and musical pieces by Alex Hadjiev, and the styropor and plaster models by Ole. The audience was able to play the sound pieces from QR codes and at the same time observe the visual forms and drawings: through this simultaneousness the individually produced art works came into interaction.
